Prime Minister David Cameron on Sunday the 10th
of February visited Scotland to outline the main reason why the people of
Scotland should vote no in the referendum.
“Put simply: Britain works.
Britain works well. Why break
it?”
David Cameron didn’t think Britain was working so well back
in 2010 (http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2010/jan/24/cameron-broken-britain),
but that was before he managed to solve all these problems as Prime Minister
(it was also before the referendum on Scottish Independence was declared, but
we aren’t so cynical as to suggest he is saying the exact opposite of what he
believes just so that we vote no and keep him in power).
But Mr Cameron has highlighted an important issue and, as a
special Valentine’s Day entry, we would like to list some of the examples that
prove ‘Britain works well’.
The UK has the most unequal society in the western world:
And it is only getting worse:
We’re losing our civil liberties and rights:
And the census doesn’t record our languages properly:
The economy is stuttering along:
Where even those who have a job struggle:
The food we eat is a mystery:
And getting more expensive all the time:
Westminster’s created an expensive cleanup bill for nuclear
power plants:
Despite renewable energy (which Scotland has huge amounts
of) being cheaper:
Child poverty remains an ongoing problem:
With some of the numbers hidden from Westminster figures:
And there are more likely to be added:
It’s not so good if you’re older either:
Or have disabled dependents:
Still, MPs at Westminster can look forward to a well
deserved pay increase:
Including those who don’t turn up too often:
David Cameron stated that ‘if you told many people watching
those Olympics around the world that we were going to erect barriers between
our people, they’d probably be baffled’.
They might not be ‘baffled’ if they came from Australia, Barbados,
Belize, Brunei, Canada, The Gambia, Grenada, India, The Republic of Ireland,
Kenya, Mauritius, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the Seychelles, the Solomon
Islands, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Uganda,
the United States, Vanuatu, Yemen or Zambia, as each of these nations achieved
the same thing we want: the freedom to make decisions for ourselves.
Of course, for David Cameron and his friends, the status quo
works very well indeed.
